Bio-infused PET

IMG_3456.jpg

In this project, Atorix Design developed a new combination of techniques and materials to create a 'cradle-to-cradle' modular block, consisting of a thin 3D-printed shell infused with unused organic waste.

The goal is to create a reusable and sustainable object that can be used in various contexts, ranging from furniture to acoustic tiles and constructions (for exhibitions).

For its production, I 3D print thin shells from recycled PET bottles, which are filled with biomaterials such as hemp, Japanese knotweed, peanut husks, coffee grounds, and other organic fibers.

This results in a faster printing time for a larger volume that is reinforced with unused organic waste streams. Additionally, there is no need for a separate mold anymore.

By pressing the biocomposite into a water-repellent shell, its acoustic and thermal insulation properties are enhanced. This process can be seamlessly integrated into Industry 4.0 and can be applied internationally at the local level, as the materials are abundantly available worldwide.

This project was part of the exhibition 'Post-industrial Crafts: RE-SHAPED', which was on display in March 2022 at the Brussels Design Museum. This exhibition was made possible thanks to LUCA School Of ArtsRish Kombucha, Brussels Beer ProjectMeuleman Bouwmaterialen and LUCA Breakout.
